Sheryls warriors: Empowering
people through fitness
and community

Sheryl’s personal training group, in the UK's city of Birmingham, is a powerful example of how fitness and empowerment can have a positive change in the community. Founded by Sheryl when she was 40 after transitioning from corporate life to personal training, the group has grown into a supportive space for people looking to transform their lives through fitness.

From corporate life to personal trainer

Sheryl’s transition from a corporate career at Barclays and the Post Office to becoming a personal trainer started by a strong desire for personal change. “I was quite overweight, a size 20, working in the bank, surrounded by cake. Finding a boot camp in Birmingham changed my life, and I wanted to do the same for others,” Sheryl recalls.

Her focus on fitness not only transformed her own life but also inspired her to help others achieve similar goals. Over the years, Sheryl has faced various challenges, from building her client base to maintaining the group’s cohesion. “I started with just four people, and now we have a consistent group of 16 to 20 every week. It's the best group I've had in 12 years,” Sheryl shares as she remembers the early days of Sheryls warriors.

Versatile fitness

The key to her success is her ability to maintain a fun and engaging environment. Sheryl’s approach to fitness is inclusive and adaptable, offering a variety of activities to keep things interesting. “We do something different every week, always making it fun. We’ve done dance-offs, squat challenges, and I even print personalized t-shirts and water bottles as prizes,” she shares.

This variety not only keeps the workouts engaging but also helps build camaraderie among the members. By creating a supportive and enjoyable environment, Sheryl ensures that her members stay committed to their fitness journeys.

Building a strong community

Community is at the heart of Sheryls warriors. Beyond the fitness routines, Sheryl has created a space where members support each other both in and out of the gym. “It's more than just a fitness group; it’s a community. We’ve got member events, like wine nights at my house,” Sheryl says.

This sense of belonging keeps members motivated and committed, making the group a unique and cherished part of their lives. She emphasizes the importance of the social aspect in her group, “People don’t always go to a gym for fitness. They go for the social side.”

Sheryl has seen friendships blossom and a strong community form. “I love it when two people who’ve never met before end up chatting their way through classes and then make plans to go out together. It’s all about bringing people together," she adds.

Peace of mind and more time for customers with Vev

A significant part of Sheryl’s strategy has been using Vev’s booking system for personal trainers, which has streamlined her operations and allowed her to focus on training. “Before Vev, managing bookings through WhatsApp was chaotic. Vev’s system is exactly what I needed. It’s user-friendly and has saved me so much time,” Sheryl explains.

Sheryl initially used other platforms, but they were not cost-effective or user-friendly. “I did a website before in GoDaddy, but I couldn't believe how expensive it was,” she mentions. Vev provided an affordable and efficient solution, allowing her to focus on her clients rather than administrative tasks. “The QR code link feature is brilliant. I put it on a sign outside the venue, making it easy for clients to book classes directly,” she adds.

Sheryl remains optimistic about Vev’s evolving features. “The classes feature you’re developing will be perfect,” she notes. The ease of booking and the ability to manage appointments efficiently have been game-changers for Sheryls warriors, ensuring that members can easily join and participate in classes.

Setting new milestones

Looking ahead, Sheryl plans to expand her operations by finding a dedicated unit for her group. “At the moment, we use a church hall, but I’m looking for a space that’s exclusively ours. Somewhere we can hold more face-to-face classes and store all our equipment,” she shares.

Her vision for the future includes not only finding a space but also growing the services she offers. “My other half wants to try kids at boxing in the same unit. It’s not just about fitness for adults,” she explains. This broader approach aims to make fitness a family affair.
